Age Pension and Government Benefits

When you retire, you may be eligible for government benefits such as the Age Pension and/or concession card.  The type of pension or benefits you may be entitled to normally depend on your age, assets and income and can be a complex area to navigate.

Age Pension

Generally, to be eligible for the Age Pension, you will:

  • Be aged over 67
  • Be an Australian resident and have lived in Australia for at least 10 years
  • Meet the income and assets tests

Concession Cards

Even if you are not eligible for any payments from the government, you may still be eligible to a concession card.  The following cards can provide retirees and seniors with discounts like health care, transport and savings on your household utilities

  • Pensioner Concession Card: Gives you access to cheaper household utilities, medical bills and in some states discounts of public transport.
  • Commonwealth Seniors Health Card: Allows you to receiver cheaper prescriptions and medical appointments.

Seniors cards: Can offer discounts on public transport and some good and services in each State/Territory.
